It can be very tough being a teenager and some find themselves overwhelmed and stressed.
It is important that as a parent you step in to talk to establish problems as they occur, or ask a friend or sometimes a therapist to support the teenager.
I have given some tips below on how to handle their feelings, so the teenagers can feel less anxious and more secure.
- It is normal to feel overwhelmed by everything life throws at them. The body reacts to stress that can make the teenager be frustrated, confused and sad at times.
- Recognise the signs of stress. This includes their moods, negative talk, tiredness and lack of sleep. If you notice any of these symptoms, chat to them to reassure them that you are there to listen; that these are signs of growing up and normal.
- Teenagers do need time to relax and be themselves without all the added pressures of homework or extra-curricular activities. This is not an excuse to not work, but it’s important that they do not ‘burn-out.’
- Look at your family life – have you experienced separation or divorce? The divorce is often not the hardest part of the sadness for a teenager, but it is often the conflict that continues between the parents. It is important to ensure that the teenager understands that they are not responsible for the conflict but are encouraged to discuss their anger or sadness with you, a friend or therapist.
- Teenagers pick up on everything and may notice if parents are struggling financially or with other challenges. All these things are factors that can add to teenage worries.
- Look at their online activity and restrict the usage or parental controls where possible.
- Sometimes social media can be positive but often it can be negative and alarming. Remind your teenager to follow inspirational people or those with beneficial messages. Negativity will sap their energy.
- Support managing their feelings. It is well researched that exercise is vital to generate endorphins into the brain to boost the mood which is like a ‘happy pill.’ Learning meditation or yoga can also assist with relieving stress.
- A healthy diet and good sleep will also help with anxiety to avoid overwhelm.
