The third Monday in January is said to be the most depressing day of the entire calendar year. But this does not have to be true for everyone. There are so many ways that you can keep yourself happy and energized on this lowly Monday. All you really need to do is come up with some things that you really love and do them. This can be a Monday just like any other Monday and hopefully this year you can escape the feelings of dread associated with it!

A little background on Blue Monday if you aren’t really sure what it is: a few scientists have claimed that this third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year because of a variety of factors. The first of which being the weather because it is often so drab and bleak in January in the Northern Hemisphere, the second being the fact that money might be really tight this time of year now that all of the holidays are over and you have spent a lot of money during them, and the last is that nagging feeling that you need to start doing more things in this new year than you were doing before.

The thought of doing new things this year should not be a downer. Setting unrealistic goals for yourself can be hard to handle, but that can be combatted by setting smaller and more realistic goals. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed and having to sit out on Blue Monday. Just keep in mind that you just got through what for some people is the happiest time of the year and now you just need to set your sights on all of the wonderful things that are coming in the New Year. There are so many amazing opportunities that come with a New Year that it can be contagious just thinking about them. No matter what you intend to do this year, there are sure to be things that you are looking forward to and can get excited for.

If you are really afraid that you are going to be feeling blue on Blue Monday, try to take that day to pamper yourself. Surround yourself with your favorite people and take a spa day. Get your nails done or see a movie or just walk around a park. Even though it might be cold, a hot coffee or hot chocolate and some great friends can really make it a special time. There are plenty of free events going on this time of year that you could attend. Anything that you can do to try to make yourself feel better, even if it is just packing your favourite lunch for work can really brighten the day and make sure that you are feeling great. And if you start to feel discouraged or have bad thoughts, just remember that it is just another Monday….and it is for YOU to make 2016 the best year ever.
